Brand strategy
What is a brand strategy?
Behind every strong brand lies more than just a good logo, a catchy slogan, or an eye-catching campaign. Before a brand becomes visible, strategic decisions must be made: What does it stand for? Who does it want to reach? What makes it relevant, and what sets it apart from the competition?
A brand strategy brings these decisions together and gives them a clear direction. It is the long-term plan a company uses to build, position, and further develop its brand. In doing so, it aligns the company’s goals with the question of how the brand should be perceived in the market.
Brand strategy also helps develop a cohesive brand image from individual initiatives. It provides guidance for product design, communication, and touchpoints, and ensures that the brand doesn’t present itself differently with every new task.
A good brand strategy is therefore like a compass: it shows the direction the brand should take, but leaves enough room to respond to new markets, target audiences, and developments. This creates a clear profile that remains relevant and recognizable over the long term.
Why Good Brands Are Always Part of the Strategy
A brand is one of a company’s most important intangible assets. It influences how offerings are perceived, the value assigned to them, and why people choose a particular company.
A clear brand strategy can therefore have a direct impact on business success. It helps a company stand out from the competition, builds trust, and can strengthen customer loyalty, pricing power, and the ability to attract new employees.
Without a strategic foundation, branding decisions often arise solely from the circumstances at hand: a campaign gets a new design, a product is given a name, or a social media channel develops its own voice. Each initiative may work on its own, but together they may not present a cohesive picture.
Brand strategy ties all these elements together. It ensures that positioning, identity, communication, offerings, and corporate culture all work toward the same goal. This way, the brand isn’t reinvented with every new initiative but is consistently developed over time.
What are the components of a brand strategy?
The key focus areas depend on a company’s starting point and objectives. A brand strategy often comprises several interconnected components:
Brand identity and brand essence: These describe what defines the brand, the values it stands for, and the personality it projects. This forms the basis for decision-making and communication.
Target audience analysis: This identifies who the brand is relevant to, what needs these people have, and what expectations they have of a product or service.
Brand Positioning: Based on research, analysis, and workshops, we determine the brand’s intended position in the market. In this process, we integrate values, personality, identity, brand promise, and purpose into a clear profile.
Brand Audit: The existing brand is examined in terms of the market, competition, communication, and design. This reveals what is already working, where the brand is losing its edge, and what potential remains untapped.
Brand Messages and Storytelling: The brand story explains why the brand exists, what it stands for, and what value it brings. Core messages translate this story into clear and recognizable statements.
Naming and Tagline Development: Names and taglines give a brand its linguistic identity. They succinctly convey the brand’s identity, value, or promise and should therefore not be developed in isolation from the overall strategy.
Brand Architecture: When there are multiple brands, products, or business segments, the relationships between them are defined. This clarifies the roles of individual brands or sub-brands and how they are connected to the umbrella brand.
Employer Brand: A brand grows from the inside out. Corporate culture, career communications, and the employer value proposition are therefore also part of strategic branding.
These building blocks do not exist independently of one another. Target audience analysis influences positioning; positioning shapes brand messages; and brand identity sets the direction for design, communication, and behavior.
A brand strategy is therefore neither a rigid document nor a collection of individual measures. It provides the framework for many decisions, from the development of a new offering to the design of a single touchpoint. In this way, a brand with a recognizable profile and a clear direction emerges from a variety of activities.
