What is an employer brand?

The employer brand describes a company’s strategic positioning in the labor market. The process of building it is called employer branding. It’s about how a company is perceived as an employer—internally by current employees and externally by potential talent.

The employer brand is not a glossy campaign, but rather an emotion: the feeling that arises when people think of a company as an employer. That is precisely why honesty and authenticity matter more than any promise on a careers page.

The job market is changing. In times of a skilled labor shortage, it is no longer the applicants who have to prove themselves, but the companies. Any company that wants to be perceived as a top employer today must actively work on its positioning.

Important: The employer brand is subordinate to the corporate brand. It does not make a new promise—it clarifies the existing one for the job market.

Building an Employer Brand: What's Behind It?

An employer brand doesn’t develop overnight, nor does it arise solely through communication. It is the result of a structured process: from analyzing the company’s own culture to developing a clear employer branding strategy and consistently implementing it both internally and externally.

At the heart of it all is the question: What truly makes this company special as an employer? The answer to this question forms the foundation for all subsequent steps—from internal communication to external branding on career sites, social media, and in recruiting.

Especially in the B2B sector, where companies often have less visibility than major consumer brands, a strong employer brand is a real competitive advantage. Companies that strategically strengthen their employer appeal not only attract more applications—but also the right ones.
