Figurative Mark
What is a figurative mark?
A brand is not recognized solely by its name. A graphic symbol can also represent a company, a product, or a particular attitude. This is the role of the figurative mark.
It is the graphic symbol of a brand, makes a company, product, or service visually recognizable, and can be used independently of the brand name. This is particularly important when space is limited—for example, on a website, in an app, on social media profiles, or on smaller promotional materials.
Thus, the figurative mark is more than just a decorative element of the logo: it is an independent part of the brand identity.
Figurative Mark vs. Word Mark
A figurative mark is a standalone graphic symbol, usually without text—for example, the Nike Swoosh or the Apple logo. A word mark, on the other hand, consists of the stylized name of a company, product, or brand, or its initials.
In practice, there are often several variations of a logo. Depending on the application, the figurative and word marks can be combined, scaled down, or simplified in different ways. This principle is known as responsive or variable logo design. The variations adapt to different formats and requirements but remain clearly recognizable as the brand due to their shared design.
There may be several approved logo variants for different applications. These include, for example, compact versions for websites, email signatures, or small digital spaces.
What makes a good figurative mark?
A figurative mark should do more than just be visually appealing. It must make the brand recognizable at a glance, convey its characteristics, and function reliably in a variety of situations. This is achieved above all when the mark is designed to stand on its own, is clearly understandable, and can be used flexibly.
A good figurative mark therefore combines strong recognizability with practical usability. It works not only in an ideal presentation but also on small surfaces, across various media, and under different technical conditions.
Uniqueness: A good figurative mark stands out clearly from other brands. It is unmistakable and must not be confused with the marks of other companies.
Timelessness: A figurative mark should remain effective over the long term and not be dependent on short-term design trends. Subtle refinements are possible as long as the fundamental character and recognizability are preserved.
Simplicity: A minimalist design is quicker to grasp and easier to remember. It also remains easily recognizable even at small sizes and across different media. Details are permissible, but they should not compromise the clarity of the logo.
Scalability: The logo must work in various sizes and formats—from a small icon on a smartphone to a display on a trade show wall. Applications in schwarz-weiß, such as a stamp, should also be taken into account.
Relevance: The shape , style, color, and character of the figurative mark must be consistent with the brand and its target audience. It should reinforce the desired effect and establish a credible connection to the company.
Consistent Use of Figurative Marks
To ensure a consistent brand image, it is important to use the appropriate, approved version based on the medium, size, and available space. Compact versions are suitable for small digital spaces, while the full logo is used for larger applications.
Sufficient white space, clear contrasts, and good visibility must be ensured—even in monochrome representations. The logo must not be altered, distorted, rotated, or enhanced with effects on its own, nor may it be used in unauthorized colors.
