What is design?

At first glance, a brand is quite abstract: it consists of values, an attitude, promises, and experiences. Design brings all of this from the mind into reality. It gives a brand a face, a form, and a character, making it tangible to people.

At its core, it’s about consciously designing products, spaces, digital apps, and media. Good design always combines form and function. So it shouldn’t just look good—it should clearly structure content, streamline processes, and convey the right mood.

For brands, design is the direct expression of their identity. Colors, shapes, typefaces, images, and animations convey values and emotions—often without many words. They ensure that a brand is instantly recognizable and evokes an emotional response.

Whether it’s the color of a button, the layout of a website, or the packaging on a store shelf: Almost everything you see is based on a design decision. Without a clear direction, a brand ultimately remains interchangeable.

Why is design so important for brands?

It makes brands tangible: Strategic values and positions are translated into forms that people see and recognize in everyday life.

First impressions matter: Even before anyone reads the text, colors and layouts provide guidance and build trust.

It ensures brand recognition: A common thread of logo, colors, and typefaces ties the brand together across all channels.

It evokes emotions: Design determines how a brand comes across—whether it’s likable, high-quality, calm, or dynamic. That creates character.

It gives you an edge: When products are interchangeable, design gives the brand its own distinct identity and draws the eye exactly where you want it to go (for example, to the “Buy” button).

What areas fall under the umbrella of design?

Brand management involves the interplay of various areas:

Corporate Design: This is the visual foundation. The logo, colors, fonts, images, and layouts together form a system that ensures the brand presents a consistent image everywhere.

UX/UI Design: The digital experience. UX design focuses on logic and usability, while UI design shapes the visible interface with fonts, colors, and buttons to ensure that using the app or website feels intuitive.

Packaging Design: Packaging is often the first real point of contact in the store; it brings the product to life and instantly builds trust.

Communication Design: Describes traditional and modern media used to convey information, ranging from business cards and brochures to social media posts and trade show booths.

Web Design: It combines visual design, content, structure, and functionality to create a well-rounded website experience.

Motion Design: Brings movement into the mix. Animated logos or graphics for the web and social media draw the eye and bring a brand to life.

Graphic Design: Refers to traditional visual design. Whether it’s layouts, infographics, or illustrations, this discipline translates complex information into a clear, understandable visual language.
