Visual Language
What is visual language?
Visual language is a broad term that encompasses all of a brand’s visual and linguistic means of expression—in short, a distinct form of communication. Two dimensions can be distinguished here.
Visual visual language encompasses photography and design—in other words, everything the eye perceives. Verbal visual language refers to figurative language such as metaphors, similes, and symbols, as used in copywriting, for example.
And how does it differ from a logo? A logo is a unique sign or symbol that represents a company. Visual language goes far beyond that. It encompasses all the images and illustrations that shape a brand and bring it to life.
Why is visual imagery so important?
In the age of social media and an increasingly visual online world, visual language is becoming more and more important. It is a brand’s aesthetic—visible on social media, in campaigns, in advertisements, and everywhere else the brand appears. To do so, it must accomplish two things at once: authentically represent the company and directly appeal to the target audience. A consistent and recognizable visual style is essential for this.
What role does visual language play?
People process images cognitively faster than text. Visual imagery is therefore one of the most direct forms of communication between a brand and its customers. It conveys meaning, associations, and emotions at a glance, deepens the connection to the brand, and creates brand recognition.
At the same time, it defines and underscores a brand’s character: dramatic lighting and subdued, elegant tones signal exclusivity. Genuine emotions and bold colors stand for courage and approachability. Visual language is thus far more than mere decoration; it embodies the brand’s entire ethos.
