Brandbook
What is a Brandbook?
A brand book—also known as a brand manual or brand guidelines—is the central document in brand management. It captures everything a brand stands for: its history, its character, its values, and its visual identity. In short, it is a brand’s code—the guiding anchor that everyone can turn to time and again.
This makes the brand book much more than just a reference guide. It serves as a guide for employees, partners, and stakeholders—ensuring everyone speaks the same language and that the brand is presented consistently everywhere. It sharpens the vision and values, highlights the company’s uniqueness, and at the same time provides a practical overview: What do we have, what else do we need, and does everything still fit together?
A brand book is worthwhile not only when building a brand—but also during a rebranding or whenever it’s time to critically evaluate the brand and bring it up to date.
What does a brand book contain?
A comprehensive brand book typically covers three areas:
Strategy: Philosophy, values, mission statement, brand stance, brand story, target audience, and positioning—presented in a vivid and engaging way, not as a dry list.
Corporate Design: Development and significance of the logo, colors, typography, and visual and graphic language. Everything that brings the brand to life visually.
Language & Tone of Voice: Brand language, communication style, and wording. How does the brand speak—and how does it not?
The last two areas are often combined into a Brand Guide and can stand on their own or be incorporated into the overarching brand book.
From a Printed Book to a Dynamic Brand Platform
A brand book can be a bound book—a valuable, high-quality, and tangible resource. But it should always be available in digital form as well. After all, brands aren’t static constructs. They evolve, are adapted, and grow alongside the company.
Content management platforms like Frontify provide the brand book with exactly this dynamic framework: Instead of gathering dust in a static document, the brand is actively managed, maintained, and made immediately applicable there. Brand guidelines, design systems, and content are accessible at any time, and teams can collaborate across locations, with feedback and approval processes running directly within the system. This turns brand management into an efficient, scalable process.
