Discover the Lower Rhine

A regional brand for an up-and-coming tourism destination, designed to highlight the diversity of 13 municipalities and their commitment to a sustainable future

(Overview)

The Niederrhein Brand:
A New Take on the Region

Where the Rhine leaves the hills behind, a region full of contrasts begins: the dynamism of the Ruhr meets Dutch serenity, industrial culture blends with nature, and tradition with new beginnings. The Lower Rhine region has everything a strong tourism destination needs—but it was hardly visible to the public. What was missing: a unified identity that weaves the stories of many towns into a single narrative.

It took more than just a logo to change that. As part of an ERDF-funded pilot project, we worked with the Wesel district, regional stakeholders, and the 13 municipalities to develop the “Erlebnis.Niederrhein” campaign—as a unifying foundation for a region that had not yet realized its full potential.

Our mission: to transform a geographic area into a regional brand that people can experience. From brand strategy and identity to a storytelling concept centered on real people, and on to original design and physical advertising and informational materials, we have positioned the Lower Rhine region as a sustainable destination.

The result: a regional brand that brings together 37 towns, three core narratives, and the people of the region under one umbrella.

From Analysis to Unifying Theme

To present the offerings of the 13 municipalities both as distinct entities and as a holistic range of experiences, an emotionally appealing brand is needed to serve as a unifying thread.

Broad-based analysis and participatory processes served as the strategic foundation for this. Site visits, target audience and status quo analyses, and intensive workshops with key stakeholders helped us understand the region and its people.

The guiding principle behind every question: What connects these places? The answer provides the common thread for a shared identity that weaves 13 independent municipalities into a cohesive, overarching narrative. Photographically and cinematically brought to life by Flaggschiff Film.

The common thread—
—that ties everything together

We’ve distilled what makes the Lower Rhine special into three key elements: authentic people, real stories, and special places. From castles to bustling farms and restaurants to slag heaps: every place has a story, and every story has a face. Farmers, restaurateurs, curators—they don’t just talk about the region; they are the region.

Three themes tie the stories together: cultural landscape, social engagement, and regional identity—all held together by sustainability. The goal: not merely to describe places, but to spark a desire to explore through vibrant language tailored to the target audience. The new tagline sums it up: “With every visit, a story grows.”

The Symbol of the Region

With the large “N,” “Erlebnis.Niederrhein” gets a logo that we deliberately modeled after the well-known “N” of Niederrhein Tourismus, yet clearly distinguishes itself from it through its unique character. The stylized, rounded shape conveys movement and anticipation, while the green anchors the brand in nature, the landscape, and recreation.

Contrast in the Color System

The color scheme of Pine Green, Leaf Green, and Meadow Green anchors the brand as a nature experience. The palette is deliberately reminiscent of the colors of the Wesel district, yet gains its own distinct depth through the rich Pine Green. This strong contrast creates the necessary tension to keep the design vibrant.

The color gradient from Leaf to Meadow softens these contrasts, brings softness to the system, and underscores the dynamism of a region that is open and accessible to everyone.

The Icon System:
Exploring the Region Intuitively

Using the four icons—water, culture, nature, and regional identity—we’ve strategically clustered the destinations and created a visual wayfinding system that extends across all touchpoints. Structured in a consistent three-part system, the icons blend seamlessly into the brand system. Together with wording tailored to specific target audiences, they provide—alongside text, images, and color—an intuitive orientation system that guides visitors through the region.

“A destination’s branding must bridge the gap from the digital world directly to the region. It’s only once you’re there that the story truly comes to life.”

Bringing Strategy to Life

What began as a strategy on paper can now be experienced at 50 information kiosks throughout the district. Each kiosk follows the same design and storytelling approach: an image, an icon, a story. The strategic triad of people, places, and regional identity comes to life here in a tangible way.

To complement this, a mini-brochure was created that picks up right where the information pillars leave off: it brings these places of experience into your home, allowing you to revisit them in your mind time and again.
