Brand Communication
What is brand communication?
A brand is more than just a logo and a name. It has a character, specific values, and a promise. Brand communication brings these qualities to light and ensures that people develop a clear picture of the brand.
This refers to the totality of all measures through which a brand presents itself both internally and externally. This includes carefully crafted messages as well as design, behavior, service, and the way a company interacts with people. After all, a brand sends signals even before a text is read or a campaign is seen.
Brand communication, therefore, does not begin with advertising. It originates within the company itself: in the shared values, in how people interact with one another, and in whether actual behavior aligns with the communicated brand image. Only when these two elements align does a brand appear credible.
The well-known saying, “You can’t not communicate,” also applies to brands. Every perceptible action can convey something about a company—whether consciously or unconsciously. Brand communication should therefore be strategically planned and consistently executed over the long term.
What Does Brand Communication Do?
Brand communication makes it clear what a brand stands for and what sets it apart from others. It answers specific questions: What does the company offer? Who is the offering relevant to? What benefits does it provide? And why should this brand be trusted?
These answers aren’t limited to campaigns. They’re evident, for example, in how a company explains its services on its website, what images are used on social media, how customer service responds to questions, or the tone of a press release.
Consistent communication ensures that these individual impressions fit together. A brand that positions itself as straightforward should write clear copy, offer simple processes, and remain clear and accessible in its customer service as well. If, on the other hand, the website, advertising, and actual behavior send conflicting signals, the brand appears untrustworthy.
Brand communication also helps position a product or service within a crowded market and set it apart from the competition. A recognizable tone of voice, design, and narrative style make it clear what makes a brand special and what values it stands for.
This creates a consistent brand image across multiple touchpoints. People recognize the brand more quickly, can better categorize it, and are more likely to develop trust. This lays the foundation for long-term customer relationships, new connections, and growing brand value.
Where does brand communication take place?
Brand communication takes place at all touchpoints. The most important channels and formats are:
Direct contact: At trade shows, events, in sales, or in customer service, the brand is experienced firsthand. The way conversations are conducted, personal demeanor, and service behavior often shape the impression more strongly than any advertising message.
Traditional media: Television, radio, print ads, and billboards generate reach and raise brand awareness.
Digital channels: Websites, social media, newsletters, and content marketing convey information, tell stories, and enable direct responses.
Press and Public Relations: Press releases, interviews, and editorial articles ensure that a brand is also present in public and social debates.
Internal Communication: The intranet, employee apps, training sessions, internal events, and brand books help embed brand values and communication guidelines within the company.
Collaborations and partnerships: Sponsorships, brand partnerships, and influencer marketing place the brand in new contexts and reach additional target audiences.
What matters is not that every channel is used equally, but that the brand remains recognizable across all relevant touchpoints. Content, design, tone, and behavior should therefore be consistent and reflect the brand’s true essence.
