Storytelling

What is storytelling?

Storytelling is about presenting information, ideas, and messages within narrative structures. In other words, it’s about telling stories. The goal is to evoke emotions, capture attention, and leave a lasting impression on the target audience.

Because the truth in marketing is this: People love stories. Our brains are neurologically wired for exactly that. Instead of presenting bare facts, expertise, values, and the benefits of our work should be packaged into narratives. This applies equally—or perhaps even more so—to storytelling in B2B: In the business world, in particular, decisions are heavily influenced by emotions. Where people often compare only numbers and prices, a good story sets a brand apart from the competition. It doesn’t have to be traditional prose—visual storytelling through design and video can also really bring a brand to life.

How does storytelling work?

Good stories follow proven structures. Depending on the product and target audience, they use effective storytelling methods such as the three-act structure or The Hero’s Journey. Every story needs the same core elements:

Focus on the target audience: What specific problems and obstacles does the target audience face?

The Conflict: Every good story needs tension. What’s at stake if the problem remains unresolved?

The Solution & the Happy Ending: How does a product or service improve the target audience’s life or day-to-day business operations?

The more complex the product, the more important the story. The spectrum ranges from quick micro-storytelling for social media to executive storytelling designed to strategically persuade C-level executives. Successful examples of storytelling show that stories make complexity tangible while also being entertaining.
