Trademark

Everyone immediately has an idea of what a brand is. But putting it into words? That’s harder than you might think. And there’s a reason for that: A brand exists largely in people’s minds.

At its core, a brand is the sum of all the ideas people associate with a company, a product, or a service. Of course, this also includes the tangible elements: the logo, design, and quality promise. That’s just the surface level. Beneath it lie emotions, associations, and experiences—things you can’t touch, but which are nonetheless crucial.

The term “brand” can be traced back to the French “marque”—a mark or sign for identification. So the concept inherently involves differentiation.

Incidentally, “brand” does not mean the same thing in marketing as it does in the legal system. Legally, it is a protected symbol. In marketing, it represents identity, guidance, trust, and a powerful tool for differentiation. Many companies offer the same thing. Yet they are perceived in completely different ways. The product describes the service. The brand describes the experience of using it.
