What is a Brandbook?
A brand book—also known as a brand manual or brand guidelines—is the central document in brand management. It captures everything a brand stands for: its history, its character, its values, and its visual identity. In short, it is a brand’s code—the guiding anchor that everyone can turn to time and again.
This makes the brand book much more than just a reference guide. It serves as a guide for employees, partners, and stakeholders—ensuring everyone speaks the same language and that the brand is presented consistently everywhere. What does a brand book contain?
A comprehensive brand book typically covers three areas:
Strategy: Philosophy, values, mission statement, brand stance, brand story, target audience, and positioning—all told in a vivid and engaging way, not just listed dryly.
Corporate Design: Development and significance of the logo, colors, typography, and visual and graphic language. Everything that brings the brand to life visually.
Language & Tone of Voice: Brand language, communication style, and wording. How does the brand speak—and how doesn’t it?
The last two areas are often combined into a Brand Guide and can stand on their own or be incorporated into the overarching Brand Book.
