What is naming?
A brand name is more than just a word. It’s the first thing people notice about a brand. Naming describes the process of developing a suitable name for a company, a brand, or a product. It sounds simpler than it often is: A truly good name rarely comes from a gut feeling, but rather from a combination of creativity, brand strategy, targeted research, and legal protection.
Naming is therefore a central component of branding. The name influences how a company or product is perceived even before anyone knows anything more about it. It is the brand’s verbal trademark.
Naming isn’t just important when starting a business. The question of naming also comes up again when introducing new products, relaunching a brand, changing the brand architecture, expanding, or rebranding.
What makes a good name?
A name has to do a lot. The most important criteria:
Does it fit the brand? A good name conveys what a company or product truly stands for. It evokes the right associations without requiring much explanation.
Does it appeal to the right people? The language, sound, and feel of a name should suit the target audience. What works for a luxury brand might be completely wrong for a young D2C label.
Is it memorable? Is the name easy to pronounce, remember, and pass on? Good names often have a rhythm or a distinctive quality that makes them unmistakable.
Will it stand the test of time? A name should not only work today but also when the company has grown, entered new markets, or expanded its product line.
Is it legally sound? Creativity alone isn’t enough. A name must be researched, reviewed, and—ideally—protected by trademark law; otherwise, it becomes a risk.
