What is Motion Design?

Motion design refers to the creation of moving visual content. Elements from graphic design—such as typography, illustrations, diagrams, or layouts—are transformed into moving images through animation, timing, and sound.

The focus is not on movement for its own sake, but on its function: it can structure content, explain relationships, direct attention, and bring brands to life visually. To achieve this, the design and animation are tailored to the brand, the target audience, and the specific application.

Where is motion design used?

Motion design is used in many digital and analog communication contexts. It is particularly well-suited for conveying content clearly, explaining processes, or directing visual attention in a targeted manner.

Animated graphics: Illustrations, diagrams, numbers, or typographic elements are brought to life. This makes it easier to present trends, relationships, and key messages in a way that’s easy to understand.

Explanatory videos: Complex products, services, or processes are conveyed through a clear visual narrative. Animations can illustrate individual steps and help viewers understand the benefits of an offering.

Presentations: Moving elements, strategic transitions, and animated content organize information and support the flow of a presentation.

Websites and Digital Applications: Animations can provide guidance, support interactions, or highlight key content. In doing so, they should make the user experience easier and not distract from the content.

Campaigns, Ads, and Social Media: Moving images can be adapted for various platforms and formats. Short animations can grab attention and convey content even when viewers spend only a brief moment on them.

Logo animations and animated brand identities: Animated logos, transitions, and defined motion principles add a temporal dimension to corporate design. This ensures a consistent brand experience in videos, digital applications, and presentations.

A comprehensive motion design concept can be adapted for use across various channels and formats. For example, a longer explainer video can be repurposed into shorter social media clips, digital ads, or animated presentation elements.

Why is motion design important?

Brands are communicating through an ever-increasing number of channels and formats. Motion offers an additional way to convey information and capture visual attention. It helps make complex content easier to grasp, illustrates processes, and guides perception in a targeted manner.

Motion design is particularly effective when it is embedded within the existing brand identity. Principles of motion, transitions, typography, and sound can all contribute to ensuring that the brand is experienced consistently, even in digital and audiovisual applications.

How Is Motion Design Created?

The process begins with analyzing the content, defining the target audience, and clarifying the desired impact. This leads to the development of the concept, the visual direction, and the motion logic. Even before the animation is created, storyboards and style frames show how the story unfolds and what visual language will be used. An animatic can also illustrate the planned sequence, timing, and approximate soundtrack.

To bring the design to life, design elements are created in programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Figma, and then animated in animation software like Adobe After Effects. Typography, illustrations, and graphics are brought to life using keyframes, transitions, and defined motion principles. Techniques such as compositing, masks, layer animations, or particle effects can complement the design. Depending on the project, 3D animation, editing, and sound design may also be used.

After the creative and technical implementation, the result is reviewed and exported for the respective channels. Factors such as resolution, aspect ratio, file format, compression, and, if applicable, subtitles are taken into account. For example, the same motion design content can be used as a video for a website, a social media asset, a presentation element, or a digital ad.
